Free Day in Fredericton

SNM Tour Day #56
Just a short blog today.

A day off the road is a day to enjoy and explore, and so we did.  We tried to sleep in at least a bit, but were eventually lured downstairs by coffee and a home made waffle extravaganza breakfast.  Thereafter we got a great little walking tour of the historic neighborhood, Arts and Cultural district of Fredericton, the waterfront and the markets.  I must say that Larry has been an amazing host and has really given us a great sense of Fredericton and New Brunswick. I love this city!

Thereafter we picked up Leanne (my sister) at the airport as she will accompanying us for the next 6 days on this Eastern leg of the tour. Despite living in Montreal for quite a number of years, this is the furthest East that she has ever been in Canada, so together we will all break new ground!!  She quickly got a feel for the Sunshine Beast and we will be raring to go bright (hopefully bright or at least not pouring rain) and early tomorrow morning.
We had a great lunch at the famous Lunar Rogue and then toured around King's Landing, a historic settlement close to Fredericton. This was a fascinating walk into the past and even more importantly a chance to buy a home made apple pie at their apple festival.

Again a huge thanks to Larry (and his side kick aka daughter Heidi) who were very gracious hosts and tour guides for our little troupe. I must say that on my last blog I thanked Larry and Anne (his wife).  I will still thank Anne although we will never meet her in person, Larry has been doing it all solo, and doing a great job I must say.

Hi All from the co-pilot chair.

It is sheer delight to be back in Canada and in the Canadian Maritimes. The landscape is beautiful, the people extremely warm and welcoming. I laughted arriving at the Fredericton airport...which felt more like a Greyhound bus station stop - no security worries...and a hospitality 'agent' encouraging people to share cabs and telling us about her family concenrs as she munched on her cheese and cracker snacks between assisting us all. Fredericton has a population of 60K and is the capital - so government buildings and a fine University for this 'inland river city'. Tourism must be popular with the fishing and camping and RV places....and at one time it was the great logging transport center - we learned there were 200 sawmills in New Brunswick at peak production - sending timber back to England for shipbuilding, in addition to local buildings. The picture of Ted, Monique, Heidi and I was taken in front of the Sawmill....honoring our Marianist Sisters living on Sawmill Road in Dayton; and that it is apprently the 'most photographed' site in the region!
A word about the Rogue pub...apparently one of top two whiskey bars in North America (other in Toronto)...the bartender walked me past the lineup of rare bortles and said the 'top one' was $90 an ounce! (and the exchange rate is near par). They also had reat list of microbrews on tap (My fav Cdn beer purchasable in the USA has long been MooseHead which is brewed in New Brunswick (Moncton where we now head)...and the Picaroos dark - brewed in Fredericton and which just happened to be an ynclaimed leftover in the Evans fridge was a treat that rivals a Guinness! Yes - the Irish, Scottish, English influence is strong in the Maritimes!

It's great to be with Ted and Monique to share this journey and their rhythm...has the feel of a bybrid between a wilderness retreat and fieldwork...so familiar to me....and I'm enjoying settling into the reflective rhythm...very prayerful....

11 am and a 'bathroom break' for Ted and driver Monique...so will sign off for now.

I'm proud of my BIG (and very lean/muscular) brother ! Leanne

  2. The picture of the moose made me wonder if you were going to do some paddling in addition to running and cycling.
