Here's my five cents worth, we've flipped, rolled and tossed ourselves into Sudbury

It threatened to rain all day (once again) but we stayed dry and got all our mileage in, arriving in Sudbury a full day ahead of schedule. Les got an early morning run in (yes, Joe she is now bounding out of bed and leading the way at a blistering pace) and both Monique and Les got on the bike for at least an hour each in the afternoon and got some reasonable mileage in. From a travel/landscape point of view, not that much different to report, except to note that we have seemed to turn another corner from farming and fishing into logging and mining. We of course stopped at the Big Nickle and took obligatory photos, this truly is a Canadian icon as a city landmark and it is massive. Unfortunately the sky was the same color as the coin – a nickel grey day in Sudbury.

What made the day pleasantly unexpected was meeting up with Stephen and Janet from Calgary who passed us, realized who they had passed and flagged us down, just outside of Espanola. Good luck on your world travels – 14 months off to do treks on all the continents of the world – wow, what an global adventure!

Also, unbeknownst to me Gina Wonfor-Keast (a long time friend from Fort Frances Ontario) had just dropped off her daughter in London for the start of University and was tracking us down for a meeting. We haven`t seen her for at least a few years and there was much news and stories (some might say bordered on gossip) that were passed between Monique and her, I could barely get a word in edgewise. I could fill this blog for days with stories involving Gina and Cam, Monique and myself over the years we lived in NW Ontario and for years after. She is the kind of friend who cannot see you for years and within minutes all those years have vanished away as if they never existed!

We will be meeting up with Bob and Tammy (also formerly from Fort Frances) over the next few days and I am looking forward to this time of reconnecting.

Enroute I did a fairly indepth interview with Craig for the Espanola newspaper. As I haven`t given any presentations for a few days – he got an ear full, probably more than he expected! We have television and radio work ahead tomorrow and there apparently has already been a great article in the Sudbury newspaper proceeding the tour. I am giving a public forum presentation for the local CMHA tomorrow night and honestly, I am keen to get back in the groove of presentations and advancing the awareness part of the tour (apart from just racking up mileage on the road).

Tomorrow we say goodbye to Les as she heads back to Calgary - she has been absolutely great to have her along, a huge support to myself and Monique in so many ways - Thanks so much Les for being part of the tour and part of our lives - you are a great friend!

Tour Day Sponsor is the Alberta College of Family Physicians – thanks again for your acknowledgement and support of this tour.

What this country needs is a really good five cent cigar

Thomas R. Marshall

There are plenty of good five cent cigars in the country. The trouble is they cost a quarter. What this country needs is a good five cent nickel.
